| | | Polyporus Can someone just confirm my id of this chap
with a hairy edge
Polyporus ciliatus.
Its just that it was 12cm tall and none of my books show any of the Polypores as this tall.

Mal | I'd agree with P. ciliatus Mal
Possible confusion only with P. brumalis but given the time of year and the mottled stipe!
As to the size I think this is quite typical of Polypores.

| | | Re: Polyporus I think this is quite normal especially where they might be a dense covering of the substrate Mal.
This was very evident with many species found in Scotland last November. We found many Cordyceps (militaris) with a typical length of > 3 inches!
Large examples of Pseudoclitocybe cyathiformis and Hygrophorus hypothejus really put the book 'average' sizes in doubt too.
All good fun

| | | Re: Polyporus P brumalis has much bigger pores. I found a few P brumalis at the beginning of April. So I'd go with P ciliatus too. BTW the stipes on P brumalis have a flattened/shallow version of the pores running down from the top, very obvious in the young ones, but rubbing off and looking more mottled in the older ones. At least mine did. And because of that the stipe top / pores boundary was not clear cut like your specimen. I was intrigued if those shallow pores on the stipe were actually fertile, but didn't discover at what point they cease to be fertile. One to pursue when they reappear. P brumalis
The P brumalis were all on ash twigs. What were yours on?

Melanie | I've noticed that too Melanie, as in this example:
