| | | Small Brown Umbonate Fungus for ID Help Please Found this today, a solitary specimen growing directly from soil amongst moss, and below a Beech tree. Stipe height about 35mm, Cap diameter about 30mm.
Gills looked substantially decurrent, but I'm not sure if this is just being exaggerated because of the upturned edges on the umbonate cap.
Stipe felt quite hollow, and snapped very easily, breaking away from remainder, which I subsequently dug out - definitely growing direct from soil and not on any sub-soil wood.
Any help towards ID much appreciated.
Regards

I did think that the overall shape & features could possibly be pointing to Lactarius, (amongst other things ), but there was no sign of any "milk" on the broken stipe - would that be normal?

Mike. | Taste it next time. It might taste foul, it might be sweet...but there's always the chance it could blow your socks off ( L. turpis ). That's one of the things I enjoy showing people with Lactarius

I can get foul or sweet, but what type of taste do you mean with reference to blowing my socks off?
Also, I know this is probably going to be a silly question, but the browny/scaly nature of the cap looks quite distinctive, although there doesn't appear to be anything similar in Phillips or Jordan (and I can't afford a set of Fungi of Switzerland ). - Can it be narrowed down any from just photos, or is it a case of "microscopy required".
Regards
