it looks like Hygrocybe pratensis meadow waxcap - though that usually has decurrent gills . . . .

| | | Re: Orange top mushroom for ID please Hi Andy,
my lack of knowledge/attention ! at the time it was growing from the earth amongst grass and bracken .. no obvious dead wood.
The general position was an hillside, open area between mixed trees, mostly conifers.
Is that any help?

It helps but nothing obvious springs to mind when I look at them. Chris is right in saying H. pratensis should have decurrent gills. It looks more Collybia-like to me but I can't think of anything that fits the bill. With cap that colour I think we may be missing something obvious here that we are over looking. Keep thinking for now.

| | | Re: Orange top mushroom for ID please I don't think it is Hygrocybe pratensis either, not just because of the gills, it doesn't look quite right for other reasons. The orange looks a bit too 'clean' and the stem colour is much paler than the cap, usually there is less difference, and the stem doesn't usually look that white. But I haven't a clue what it might be. But very pretty. What time of the year was it found?

| | | Re: Orange top mushroom for ID please The lighting is probably not helping here but I think it may be a very young species of Collybia or perhaps Psathyrella. Not easy at all with so little to go on.

John | I agree it's a puzzling situation . . . though I think gill colour would rule out Psathyrella . . .

Chris | Yes, quite so Chris. I was ignoring the gill colour and concentrating on the cap detail, especially that of the front fruit body.
We will probably never know for certain!

Melanie | Hi, thanks to everyone for your input ... now I'm even more confused !
