| | | Puccinia urticata Question Found lots of Nettle Rust Fungus today, all of which I assume is Puccinia urticata.
I (perhaps wrongly) was under the impression that this had the common name "Nettle Clustecup Rust".
However, BMS's common names index refers to Nettle Clustercup Rust as Puccinia caricina
Could anyone confirm if these are Puccinia urticata, and advise the correct English/Common name.
Regards

| | | Re: Puccinia urticata Question Try Malcolm Storey's Bioimage site. It seems to answer the question: P. urticata has been split from P. carcina in the recent past. |

Mike. | hi Mike
time was when all the rusts on Carex were called either Puccinia dioicae or Puccina caricina and there were lots of varieties: P. caricina var. urticae-hirtae on Carex hirta; P. caricina var. urticae-flaccae on Carex flacca etc. . . others like P. caricina var. pringsheimiana alternated (if memory serves) with gooseberry, P. caricina var. ribis-nigri-lasiocarpae with other Ribes species . . . etc. etc.
in 1993 a guy called Zwetko published research which led to some changes in the sedge rusts, essentially separating the Urtica rusts from those alternating with Ribes - hence the re-appearance of Kern's Puccinia urticata a name published in 1917
as regards the "correct" English name, I think the above shows the problems and why I encourage people to keep away from them most of the time - they appear to make things easier for the amateur but often don't
so this is still the nettle cluster-cup rust - it hasn't changed, the scientific name has PS shouldn't this really be on the Fungal Plant Parasites thread? PPS Puccinia dioicae also with its later stages on sedges alternates with members of the daisy family - like Cirsium, Centaurea, Aster etc.
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Puccinia urticata Question Thanks Posch, & Chris.
Chris, I didn't put it on the Fungal Plant Parasites thread, because P.urticata had already been discussed on there, and I didn't want to appear to be returning to the same subject on that thread. (I thought I was doing the right thing ).
