| | | Asco on pine needle - any ideas? I found this asco on a pine needle yesterday. Size 11mm across. Asci size average 104um long, 7.2um wide. Spores 11-18.6 x 3.1-5.1um, average 13.6 x 4.0um.
Any ideas?
I also found a single Clitocybe fragrans and a single Strobilurus tenacellus nearby, and of course Hypholoma capnoides.

this is my interpretaton od Cudoniella rubicunda. Quite similar to Cudoniella tenuispora (C. clavus var. grandis), but reddening and occuring in needle litter instead of herbaceous stems or twigs in very wet places.
I think it is rare, I found it only once myself
best regards,
Andreas

best regards,
Andreas | ooh I wasn't far wrong then
only 15 widely-spaced UK records on FRDBI, mostly on pine cones -
only previous Yorkshire one (if it was from Yorkshire?) "on/with Pinus sylvestris, fruit, cone, 25/05/2000, England, Mid-west Yorkshire (VC64), Fewston Reservoir, Washburn Valley, SE1854 . . . ." so this would be new VC record
nice one

With both of you coming up with Cudoniella in the very same minute, must be on the right track there .... I've just been and checked what info I can find and yes, it looks right. It was not in a very wet area, just damp, although there is a wet ditch nearby, and I walk that path very regularly and know that particular bit isn't inundated even after torrential rain. So is there anything else I need to check to verify it as Cudoniella rubicunda?
Good thing the Strobilurus was growing about 300mm away otherwise I'd not have spotted it.
Cheers
Melanie
P.S. it was in SW Yorkshire ... my usual site.
