| | | What Edible mushrooms are in season? not that I am going to go out with my limited knowledge and pick - but I thought it might be an interesting and informative question to have answered!

Vix | Hi Vix
Chicken of the Woods - Laetiporus sulphureus and the Oyster Fungus - Pleurotus ostreatus are plentiful at this time of year and both are quite easy to recognise …but you still need to be 100% sure!
Chanterelles - Cantharellus cibarius are now showing in several locations but you need to be aware of the false Chanterelle - Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca.

That's not as many as I expected! I assumed I would get a huge list of ones I had never heard of before - |

| | | Re: What Edible mushrooms are in season? I've just enjoyed some nice young Jews Ear collected from rotting Wych Elm with my sarnies for lunch today. Sliced raw, they do make an agreeable crunch in a salad sandwich. |

| | | Re: What Edible mushrooms are in season? Yep, that's the only way I can describe the way it feels between the teeth. Just like a firm flexible jelly with little taste, it's the texture that's interesting.
Crunch might not be the the most appropriate word but it's the way I would descibe it.
I've also eaten them cooked in casseroles and the like having first eaten them in a monastery in Hong Kong many years ago. |
