| | | Any Idea ? Came across this little gem on top of a fallen oak last week.
Not got a clue what it is, looks to be new growth emerging from an old sp. which can just be seen at the rear. The new growth was only 7cm across.
I am intrigued by it and would welcome any comments and views as to what it might be.

Wait until it grows. Does it bruise red? |

| | | Re: Any Idea ? Hi Colin
Thanks for the input. My gut feeling was that it was a bracket in its early stages.
Unfortunately did not carry out the bruising test.
Had a good trip out in Micheldever Woods, Hampshire today and found 14 species new to me.
Took on board FungiJohns advice and took some shots of gills, stems, noted dimensions, habitat etc which have helped tremendously with ID's.
A couple of aspects are confusing me a bit. First the bruising test, tried it and in all cases there was no bruising or a slight darkening of the natural body colour. It might sound daft but how do you go about this test and on which part of the fungi.
With regard to the smell test they all smell the same to me that is to say they smell musty and of fungi. Perhaps I just have not got a sense of smell.
If anyone can advise on either of these aspects it would be appreciated and no doubt a help to others trying to learn the tricks of the trade.
