| | | Coprinopsis atramentaria or ?? this was found today at the edge of a footpath alongside a hawthorn hedge,
a solitary specimen, measured approx 3 inch tall,
first thoughts were C.atramentaria, but all the ones i have previously found have been a much brighter brown colour, no white deposit on the cap seemed to rule out C.micaceus,
is this just an odd coloured specimen or could it be something else ?,
although nothing else seems to fit the description from the books i have ,
thanks,
Brian. |

| | | Re: Coprinopsis atramentaria or ?? I would have said C. atramentaria too Brian. They seem to sometimes have a 'shimmer' to them as shown in your specimen. I can't think what else it could be, though the whole Coprinaceae complex never ceases to surprise (and annoy ) |

| | | Re: Coprinopsis atramentaria or ?? The other species closely related to this is Coprinopsis romagnesiana but it has a pileus and lower half of the stipes covered in bright apricot or rusty veil.

| | | Re: Coprinopsis atramentaria or ?? thanks for the input on this one,
it looks most likely to be C.atramentaia then,
as for the C.romagnesiana that Mal mentioned, i had some of what i assumed to be C.atramentaria growing on the buried remains of a fence post in the garden last year of which the lower part of the stipe was the same gingerish brown (for want of a better description) colour of the cap, being a common fungi, and already having lots of pics of these , i didn't bother taking a pic of them,
so i'll never know for sure what i had lesson no 659, record all your finds )
i will keep an eye on the spot in case they reappear this year.

Brian. | I keep having to repeat that lesson ... I find it is very easy to only half register any differences and just assume I know what it is based on what was there before. Its the "Oh, it is just another one of those ..." syndrome ...

Melanie | Hi Melanie,
on one or two occasions when i have gone for a second look i have found a new species(for me) ,
like the Trichaptum abietinum i had passed by for months, thinking they were old turkeytail or Stereum only to find on closer inspection what thay actually were,
it just proves that you should take nothing for granted, especially in the amazing world of fungi
