I've normally stayed well clear of these as they seem a bit of a minefield! but this year I wan't to give them a go and see if I can ID a few.

You are right Russula are a bit of a nightmare.
From a shortlist of 8 have narrowed it down to two possibilities based on what I can detect from the pictures.
As you suggest cyanoxantha (Charcoal Burner) the other parazurea. The former has flexible gills where the latter has brittle gills and is less common.
Be interesting to get the experts input on this one.
