| | | fungi on woodchip pile found today on a pile of woodchip, a solitary specimen, quite a large one, measuring about 5 inches across, stem 2 or 3 inch tall, a dry feel to the cap, and no noticable smell to it,
first thoughts were Pluteus cervinus,?? |

John | Hi John,
thats a much better idea than my pluteus
the only thing that seems to be missing is the smell! , but then i didn't cut or crush it, so may have missed that clue, everything else seems to fit T.saponaeceum ok though,
most of the literature says they grow in troops so there may be more to come in the future,

| | | Re: fungi on woodchip pile Hello,
I cannot imagine a Tricholoma growing on a heap of wood chips. They are all micorrhizal species.
In think it is nevertheless a Pluteus species and suggest Pluteus ephebeus. I ahve another Pluteus in mind which is grey and big, but don't remember the name now. May be later, my literature is not in reach until weekend.
best regards,
Andreas

best regards,
Andreas | Hi Andreas,
i long ago gave up expecting fungi to conform to the textbooks description of their growing habits
if its any help the woodchip pile was quite deep (three feet or more at the apex, where this one was growing), so it had obviously not just grown through the woodchip itself,
the woodchips were composed of mainly sycamore and birch, judging from the stumps in the area,
other than the missing smell, the other thing that made be think it was not a Pluteus, was the size of the stipe, it was quite robust, and the Plutus seem to have much more slender stipes, but then again ???

Was this found at Clumber? If so I'll take a look at the location this weekend.
