fungal mycelium

In January last year (2008) I dug a large pond at my home in North Cornwall. Once it was finished there was a large bloom of a thick cotton like matter in the pond. I at first thought it was some sort of algae but a microbiologist freind identified it as a fungal mycelium growth. It gradually disapeared over the next couple of months. Is this something to be concerned about? Has anyone else seen this type of thing? It has not apeared this year, was there a particular reason this fungal growth might have appeared last year?

Sounds like blanket weed to me.... was it green?

Blanket weed can be a problem in new ponds where the balance hasn't settled itself. You'll find a topic about it here:

There are probably loads more in the Pond section as it's a common problem but the above was the first one I found!

Oh, and blanket weed is an algae, if that's what it was.

Sounds like Blanket weed to me too Jake. Typical with a new pond in spring and early summer until it's in balance.
