| | | Re: Fungal Plant Parasites My thanks to Posch for finding a rust for me as we wandered around Attenborough (south Notts) this afternoon and for id'ing the host!
E&E gives two alternatives on Glechoma hederacea Ground Ivy so this has to be Puccinia glechomatis - the teliospore clinches it.

| | | Re: Fungal Plant Parasites I wonder if this is Mycosphaerella isariphora / Septoria stellariae please.
Most of the records on the FRDBI are from a C Yeates!
The leaf is Stellaria media Common Chickweed and the limited quality inset is consistent with the conidia as described in the Ellis and Ellis entry for Septoria stellariae.
Thanks

Chris | Thank you Chris.
I hope this next question is not going to be dumb one!
Mycosphaerella isariphora is an ascomycete, Septoria stellariae is a powdery mildlew - is it the asexual/conidial form of Mycosphaerella isariphora??

Richard | Not a dumb question; it is indeed the imperfect state of the Mycosphaerella . . . . (though the question is preceded by a slightly dumb statement - Septoria stellariae is no way a powdery mildew - it's what is informally called a coelomycete); often it is the imperfect state of pleomorphic fungi which is more often encountered - it usually occurring on the living, more easily recognised, leaves of the plants
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Fungal Plant Parasites It seems fitting that following on from Richard's Mycosphaerella anamorph - the Septoria above - to post another; this would have been called a "hyphomycete" (the fact that both are asexual states of the same fungal genus helps underline the artificiality of terms such as "coelomycete" and "hyphomycete")
Because this one has no "perfect" Mycosphaerella state (or at least no known one to date) it remains in the large anamorphic genus Ramularia; I found it while collecting the rust fungus Milesina scolopendrii - which is just visible as "pimples" at the top right of the image, but I shall post separately on that in any case. Keeping the fern fronds slightly damp in a poly bag (not something to be recommended for larger fungi! ) for a couple of days encouraged the Ramularia and it was then that I spotted it. It is Ramularia scolopendrii Fautrey:
and there are very few British records: British Fungi - record details
hopefully this might encourage others to look out for it - if anyone wants any finds checked PM me and I'll be happy to look at material
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Fungal Plant Parasites A few from this morning (plus one or two from the past week): Puccinia tussilagenisis on Groundsel. Puccinia distincta on Daisy (presumed): Protomyces macrosporus on Cow Parsley
A white spot on Lesser Celandine
White patches on a grass
Powdery Mildew on a Geranium sp., presumably Podosphaera fugax. Puccinia aegopodii on Ground Elder
Another unknown on Lesser Celandine (a raised blister) Uromyces dactilydis on Lesser Celandine
A couple of unknowns on Box:
Posch
PS. Plenty of Uromyces muscari about too. |
