Jessica | Hi Jessica, "Mealy" in the fungi context means smelling or tasting of flour.
Having said that, even if your fungi appear to fit the bill, you must not under any circumstances eat any without absolute certainty of the species involved. You might try to get them identified "physically" by someone with the requisite level of knowledge.
It is all to easy to make a mistake - a mistake which some people have made to their eternal regret -they poisoned themselves to death.
Don't want to be a killjoy, but with fungi, that's the way it is.
Regards
Mike. |

When i cut them open, there were brown flecks running through and a citrus smell.
Help appreciated for a novice!
Thanks | Steve
Sorry to be a killjoy but I don't think you have St Georges there. As you can see from other posts here they are (dirty)white/cream with sinuate gill (that means they are notched just before joining the stem) and finally they have a strong smell of wet flour. Your find does not seem to fit any of those criteria.
Unfortunatley I am not sure what they might be.

| | | Re: St. George's? It's been quite good for Calocybe gambosa this season, although the recent warm/dry spell is drying them out down here and the season could be short (unless we get rain soon). Picture is a basket of St George's I collected last week from outside my office! |

They might taste funny to you, but they don't to thousands of other people. It's all opinion based
PS- Hullo Ian haven't seen you for ages. Have you been munching St. George's? |

That said i have been noticing a fair few of mushrooms about lately, more then i normally do at this time of year but i can't really say that in past years i have been paying much attention to fungi
My St. Georges appeared around 15 days ago around a cherry tree by my work... in the middle of a city. |
