| | | help Coprinus sp? Hello,
Would anyone have a suggestion to help me identify this one?
I'm fairly certain it must be a Coprinus sp? but, then I'm stuck. Growing on a grass bank, about four or five together, but not as a clump. Gills were ripening from the outside in, still slightly white right at the top, but then dissolved completely in the specimen I took home, to give a jet-black spore print.
The dull fibrous scaly appearence without the tall elegant stem could only make me think of atramentarius - does this sound right? There was just a couple of things which made me think not - but particularly that Philips says the smell should be "faint and pleasant". The odour was strong and distinctly unpleasant - quite rank in fact. Has anyone got any further suggestions?
Help for a beginner would be much appreciated - cheers,
David. |

| | | Re: help Coprinus sp? Hello David,
you are right with your idea, this is indeed Coprinus atramentarius. The weather made this exemplare a little strange and such fruitbodies are often "determined" as Coprinus romagnesianus or Coprinus atramentarius var. romagnesianus. However I believe, that there is a true Coprinus romagnesianus with true squamules which are not due to wheather conditions.
best regards,
Andreas

Mal | Are we looking at the number of cap scales and length of cap in comparison here Mal?? If so I would probably agree on Coprinopsis romagnesiana.
Nice picture too

John | Thanks John. I used just those features to decide it was C. romagnesiana and as they were fresh and it had not been a dry time they were not weather related features.
