| | | Is this a Panaeolus sp., please? Photographed fairly early in the morning on 14th April on a wide grassy path through new "woodland", which still only consisits of very young deciduous trees, bushes/shrubs and gorse. There were only 3 specimens: 2 very small and emerging with rounded/bell-shaped caps and one slightly more mature but probably still quite young (gill pic.) The stem was more or less the same colour as the cap and seemed stuffed rather than hollow. No apparent ring and a "mushroomy" smell. Sorry about the poor quality of the pic but I only had my old compact digital camera with me and it preferred to focus on the grass! Then I was distracted by a couple of bursts of Grasshopper Warbler song which was really what we were there for in the first place!
I have come to the tentative (and probably wrong! ) conclusion that this might be a Panaeolus of some sort because of the dark, mottled gills.
Any suggestions, please? (Apart from the one about ignoring the birds and concentrating on the fungus! )
