| | | Re: mushroom picking Hi Philip and welcome to WAB.
What I would suggest is contacting your local wildlife / National Trust centre and joining a local foray. These normally take place in september / October. Not only do you gain valuable experience from a trained mycologist but you will also meet other local people who will probably have greater knowledge of the sites local to you.
If you google ... fungi forays in 'your location' It should bring up some useful information.
Also, take a look at the fungi resource centre / book review section for further information.
Good luck

You are ideally located for the New Forest one of my favourite haunts where you will find a wealth of mushrooms and toadstalls. I personally favour the Brokenhurst area in particular Rhinefield on the A377.
The following link will take you to the Forestry Commission where you can download a leaflet on New Forest Fungi to get you started. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/website/o...rintFriendly=y
I strongly endorse Johns comments. Finding mushrooms is one thing but establishing whether they are edible or deadly poisonous is another and not something to be taken lightly.
Regards
