| | | New fungi after gravel / flagstones installed? Hi
I noticed these lovely beasties sprouting like you wouldn't believe after we put down new gravel and flagstones in the back yard. Can anyone ID them?
Many thanks!

| | | Re: New fungi after gravel / flagstones installed? welcome to WAB solarwind, these fungi are Pezizas, they can only be IDed by microscopy or someone very clever. Unfortunately I am neither - so someone will be along shortly to help more |

| | | Re: New fungi after gravel / flagstones installed? By the look of the outer surface Peziza succosa would be a candidate, but as
KT say's these really need expert microscopy to be certain, they just seem
to vary enough in size/colour and form to make visual ID's tenuous at best.
Any way nice photo's, isn't it remarkable the environments fungi seem
adapted to.

SW. | I think you'll find the fungi forum of WAB is a pretty special place. Theres quite a few experts who grace these boards and will give an ID for almost anything. I'm not one of them though. Fungi is more of an autumn thing for me when theres no flowers |

Cheers J.P. | hi
this is a good example of how a change in micro-habitat can induce fruiting in fungi . . . disturbed soil, an animal's wee, a branch or twig becoming detached from the parent tree, a fire - indeed the 'casing' necessary during the production of the familiar shop-bought Agaricus bisporus - all can trigger fruit-body production
I agree with the general comment about needing to do the microscope work with Peziza species, unfortunately
not sure about this being succosa though - if it is that then breaking a fruitbody should yield a yellowish juice
see: Peziza succosa - Peziza succosa | Wild About Britain on the A to Z (note the yellowing around the central crack in the fruit-body)
regards
Chris
