| | | Re: English Truffle I live in the Kentish downland & I've noted lots of places where the English truffle should be growing according to the various descriptions I've read on the net. I haven't got a trufflehound nor do I know what truffles smell like but I do know a man who lives not far from me & who does have a Lagotto dog & who is interested in the same thing as me. |

| | | Re: English Truffle Hi Betty
The Truffle is as you say a fungi which is usually buried. You'll find it (If you're extra lucky) growing about 3 inches below ground in the soil, sometimes partially buried to reveal a black lumpy hemisphere protruding from the ground. They belong to the Tuber family, of which Tuber magnatum and Tuber melanosporum are members. Tuber magnatum or The white truffle is usually found in Italy and the Italians, as they would, consider it as the best edible truffle. However, Tuber melanosporum grows in the Perigord region in France and is considered as the best edible truffle by the French. Here in Britain, we are lucky to have a member of the Tuber family that goes by the name of Tuber aestivum. Commonly referred to as the Summer truffle, this Tuber, along with all others, is always found in association with tree roots. We could expect to find them around the bottom of Beech and Oak trees and they prefer calcareous soils. There are other members of the Tuber family that I have not mentioned, but they remain inedible.
Truffles are a delicacy in many places. Becoming a more popular option on the menus though! They are renowned for their extremely intense flavour and also known for putting a hole in your pocket. Not cheap. A French friend of mine once described to me about how he had bought a Perigord truffle from a market in France and he put it an the egg box for a few hours without cutting it. He had a truffle omelette that night without even having to include truffle. The intense flavour had gone through the egg shells to flavour the eggs.
I have one truffle patch in the United Kingdom. I'll take it to the grave with me When I go back in early summer, if I find any, I'll post some pictures as it would make a good entry into the Gallery!
