Black galls on tree

I was walking in Great Church Wood in Woldingham, Surrey, and noticed some black galls growing on a tree. There was a cluster of half-a-dozen or so, very smooth, a consistent black in colour, rock hard and hard to remove.

Any suggestions what they might be?

Hello,

Sounds like Daldinia, probably D. concentrica. I'd presume it was growing on Ash. It's a common fungus all year round.
