| | | Growing On Bonfire Site Came across these LBJ's scattered across a bonfire site in mixed woodland whilst in the New Forest yesterday. They were in quite large numbers and the caps were up to 4cm in diameter and they had a pleasant aroma. Any ID suggestions would be welcome.
Regards

| | | Re: Growing On Bonfire Site Hi David
Had a look in FoS and have to agree that Pholiota highlandensis is a strong contender. The only reservations I have are in respect of the stipe, the red brown colour of my find does not look right also if my memory serves me right the stem diameter of these examples was probably 10-12mm, P.highlandensis is described as 1.5-4mm.
It would be useful to get a few more views.

| | | Re: Growing On Bonfire Site It doesn't quite have the Pholiota highlandensis look to me.
How about a Cortinarius sp? There are one or two associated with burnt ground too!

| | | Re: Growing On Bonfire Site I agree with John - this is is P. highlandensis checked microscopically:
I don't think the fungus in question is the same thing - I see what Nick means about fusipes
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Growing On Bonfire Site I think Nick could be on the right track with fusipes it had crossed my mind, as did Laccaria proxima.

Oh how I wish I had more screen to look at! | Nick, I think you might be on the right track here with Inocybe hows about I. erubescens A little dark but this species does vary, also the gills are a little light, but the fb's are probably immature. It would fit with time of year, the reddening on the stem and doesn't I. erubescens have a pleasantish aroma?
