| | | Agarics in Spring Quite the suprise today coming across a troop of these (looking decidedly
thirsty).
From the size of ballooned cystida (phillips) i'm thinking Agaricus arvensis.

| | | re: Agarics in Spring Hi JP,
I've seen Horse mushrooms a number of times in the Spring, but not this year so far. I suspect it is far too dry at the moment, no wonder they looked thirsty. Looks like there may some rain coming later in the week.

I don't think this is A. arvensis. With the adpressed scales on the cap and a less than impressive ring both of which are wrong for arvensis I think it is probably another species. Check the spores and get back to us and was there an aroma of any sort?

Spores on gill face of the fungi at different stages of ripening, fit ok with
those on bioimages.
My working hypothesis is these are just very dehydrated, couldn't make out
any aroma of note.
The cystidia fit with illustration in Funga nordica, so remain happy to be wrong
but the reference material i have seem to fit.

The cap of A. arvensis bruises yellow rather like A. xanthoderma only not as much and also much slower and the flesh of the stipe also shows some sign of yellowing. Did you notice any change on handling?

| | | Re: Agarics in Spring Thank's to who ever corrected the title.
These specimens have been bothering me with my confusion of features,
this morning the one i collected had a mushroom smell. So i have posted it
to mr Jordan to get his take on it, spending quite a bit of time in the books
i can see it maybe something i havn't found before.

| | | Re: Agarics in Spring What a learning experience being wrong is, these have come back as
Agaricus bitorquis, now we've had some rain perhaps more will appear.
