| | | Unidentified Woodchip Fungus for ID Help Please Found these today growing in a woodchipped area of a local beech wodland.
All three appear to be the same species, with the small emerging one being about 50mm diameter, the middle one being about 75mm diameter, and the largest being a full 125mm diameter, with a stipe height of about 50-60mm.
I don't have much of an idea as to what they might be, but the gill structure and dark edges to (some of) the lamellae are similar looking to what those on Panellus serotinus looked like much earlier this winter.
Small..........................Medium............. ..........Large..........................Large (Gills)
Any help with identification much appreciated.
Regards

This particular woodland is where I've taken most of my F. velutipes pics. over this winter, and these definitely don't look anything like them - they all had the classic shiny viscid caps that you would expect, were all growing in groups, and looked much different to these when they were drying.
There are still a few Pleurotus ostreatus in the woods, but I haven't seen any Panellus serotinus for about three months now, and no Flammulina velutipes for about 6-8 weeks. (in this wood).
Today's find were growing singly, all the caps were dry to the touch, and the smell was just vaguely mushroomy.

| | | Re: Unidentified Woodchip Fungus for ID Help Please The White rim around the edge of the rust-orange cap may be quite a characteristic combined with the slightly mottled look of the cap. Looks like Gymnopilus penetrans for me. Bear in mind that I amviewing the images on my phone though so I could be massively wrong! |

| | | Re: Unidentified Woodchip Fungus for ID Help Please Closer inspection of the gills puts J.P's suggestion closer than mine, but something is still not right. That first image is a very odd cap that I wouldn't expect to see in either species mentioned in this thread so far. A baffler. |

Having already not managed to identify my own find of M. cognata (without a helpful nudge) I am glad you suggested this as it was my first thought.

Mal | I had many problems with this variable species last year until Nick came to the rescue. The finds on woodchip at Clumber also had the characteristic but faint sweet smell ... of success
The darker fruiting bodies are quite common (as also mentioned by Andreas in his book) and given the time of year ...
