| | Unidentified Black Fungi
I found this fungi while I was out photographing in my local woods. I have attempted to search for it online, but can't really find anything that comes close to it. I'm trying to label a lot of my pictures with their correct names (latin names also).
Any assistance will be appreciated |

| | | Re: Unidentified Black Fungi It looks like a 'Daldinia Concentrica - Cramp Ball fungus' to me, assuming that is a branch it is sitting on and not a stem!
If it is a stem, then I have no idea.. maybe some of the more experienced here will be able to ID!

| | | Re: Unidentified Black Fungi Hello! Thanks very much for the quick reply!
Unfortunately, it was a stem that was connected to a small mossy log that it is situated on. |

| | | Re: Unidentified Black Fungi Sorry, but that's no stem! It's wood! Daldinia concentrica as Vix suggested. Probably Ash!

| | | Re: Unidentified Black Fungi Daldinia certainly, but as has been mentioned in several recent posts (and just the other day by Andreas) ID's to species in this genus are fraught with difficulties
if on ash it is probably D. concentrica, but there are 7 Daldinia species on the British list now

| | | Re: Unidentified Black Fungi That would prove troublesome wouldn't it!
I couldn't tell what type of wood it was on, due to the decomposition of the wood and it being covered in green moss. |

| | | Re: Unidentified Black Fungi Well, I was going to say that D. concentrica was the most common here in Uk with an Ash substrate, but I didn't have a clue that there were 7 species of Daldinia |

Chris | I found this, which is perhaps just the start of the Daldinia story, but interesting anyway. If we have 7 in the UK, and 9 in Europe then there is perhaps a sequel to this? :Xylariaceae: Daldinia

| | | Re: Unidentified Black Fungi Woohoo....you mean I actually managed to ID it correctly (albeit possibly not exactly) *punches air in excitement*
Sorry, I shall contain my elated condition and not let it go to my head...
It's only taken 4 months of being on here!
