With the absurdly mild (even gorgeous) weather we are enjoying at the moment, should one expect the St Georges to be popping up rather earlier than normal?
Say end of the month? |

Not up here in Scotland David, we are still in the throws of late Winter, the snow only melted yesterday

Last year the first reports from this area of north east Hampshire occurred very early - around St Patrick's Day; and that was after an exceedingly mild February. It will be interesting to make the comparisons this year after such a contrasting start to the year weatherwise.

Mild? I don't know where you are but overall (in the UK) the winter has been below average in temperature, and we haven't had that in a while: Long Range Weather Forecast for the UK - Winter Outlook - Netweather.tv
"Forecast updated 25th February - Spring and early Summer
Following on from a winter which will return below average temperatures, the early part of Spring is expected to follow suit, with March likely to be cooler than the seasonal norm, pointing towards an increasing risk of colder air returning following what has been a mild end to February".
A few days of relatively warm weather does not make a spring. In Hampshire this time last year I was picking St Georges - nothing at all so far this year. In fact as far as plants go out in the countryside just about everything is 3-4 weeks behing compared to last year.
Saying all of this I have a feeling St Georges like a cold winter. Last year we had a relatively cold start to spring (we had snow in April in Hampshire) and this really seemed to bring the St George's up. We shall see!  |
