| | | Dune fungus id needed This one is completely eluding me. Found in late October in the fixed dune open grassland at Holy Island, Northumberland. Any ideas even to genus level?
Sorry about the loss of detail on the latter two photos, it seems to lose a lot when I upload.

Cheers J.P. | Good shout J.P, though I've never seen one with such a thick stipe. They're quite light too. Gills seem distinctive, but I suspect this is a specialist genus |

| | | Re: Dune fungus id needed Hello Melanie,
interesting thing this! Did you keep a specimen of it? It would sure be worth examining.
It looks so charakteristic, but I don't know in which genus it should belong.
The two fotos from below suggested Cystoderma or Chamemyces to me, but the upper side and/or the stipe are against that idea.
On one fotos it looks like as if there is a slight thickening in the most upper part of the stipe, a kind of "pseudo-velarzone". E.g. Hygrophorus or Limacella often has that, but I don't see either in your foto. Melanoleuca? Hmmm, not very convincing to me, but who knows? Calocybe/Gerhardtia incarnatobrunneum? Why not. A Lyophyllum may be?
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Dune fungus id needed Hallo Andreas
It does look characteristic, looks as if it should be easy to id, so I'm glad that others aren't finding it straightforward. And there does seem to be a pseudo velar zone, you are right there ...
I didn't keep a specimen as it is a nature reserve that has big notices telling you that collection of plants etc is forbidden ... (I could do with finding out how one gets permission to take specimens to id, and preserve, when one does come across something interesting on this type of site.)
However I'm just in the process of downloading a list of species for dunes on that site, and for other sand dune systems in the UK, by Maurice Rotheroe, who specialised in dune fungi, so that might give me some pointers.
Cheers
