| | | help with lbj !? I’m fairly new to fungi so am hoping that I can learn a lot from this forum – hope you all don’t mind lending some of your experience to a newbie?
There’s seems to be a lot of little brown jobs around at the moment, which I’m finding pretty tough to ID but I don’t really want to just give up them as being out of my reach at this stage. I’ve just realised that where I’m repeatedly finding ones which are a tad decurrent, then this is a give-away that it’s Tubaria – does this seem right?
I found this one yesterday, and, I singled it out as having slightly different gills… but it was definitely growing on a piece of dead wood, which you could pick up off the ground, mushroom attached. Spore print was again a fairly light brown.
So I got home, to consult Philips on what lbj’s grow on wood not on the ground – and there don’t seem to be many in there?? Am I right in thinking that they’re aren’t that many ochresporae that grow on dead wood – other than ones that grow in clumps which this definitely isn’t. Do you think I’ve got another Tubaria here or not?
On a completely diffierent point – do you think that it would be true to say that the scarlet elf cup is rarer the further north you are, or did I just completely make that one up?
Any help is much appreciated. When you’ve been into fungi less than a year, then it feels like you’re always seeing things for the first time, so, I’m hoping that this site can really help me out. |

| | | Re: help with lbj !? Hi David, great to have you aboard
I think that you've got a Tubaria species. It's growing on wood, which is right and the cap margin is striate (sort of, pleated). I find that certain members of this family are pretty abundant at most times throughout the year. Quite a confusing Lbj to start with, as it can be confused with the more common (in Norfolk anyway!) Laccaria laccata.
This site is bound to help you out. It's a complete godsend. We have our resident experts who you'll meet some point soon no doubt (correcting me on my wrong ID probably) This site has done massive amounts for my knowledge of fungi, and in my eyes at my level, the most resourceful fungi area on the internet.
As for your Elf cups, I'm not sure
Stick around, always good to have people who have a good interest
Take the Spring as a period in which you can get yourself familiar with the species that usually show in Autumn. Without a doubt you will find specimens in the Spring, but as you know, the more substantial species come a little later on in the year.
Hope that helps, and if you need anything, just ask!

Like yourself, I've only been into fungi for a few months, so lots of new things to find out about - It's a mammoth subject . (I agree with Nick though, that WAB must be just about the best place available to increase your knowledge). You will be made very welcome, and your fungi know-how will come on in leaps and bounds.
As for the Scarlet Elf Cups, I don't know how far north you are. I'm in central Lancashire, and I've spotted them, (without too much effort), at four local woodlands within the last three weeks.
Best regards, and happy fungi spotting.

Mike. | Ps welcome to WAB
And I'm over the border in the white rose county and have been in only three local woods but they obviously don't like this area because I have yet to find one

| | | Re: help with lbj !? Hi David and welcome, especially to the fungus fun!
Your post is so similar to some of mine - I find it so tough with laccaria and tubaria differences.(see pic)
this is an example of what I thought was laccaria, but is probably tubaria (F or H) and looks so similar to your pic!!!
I do however have some proper tubaria which grow in such a similar way to your description, on woody substrate.
Just to add to Nicks points though, its a good thing to add all details you can for an ID post, such as smell, substrate, location, spore print, spore colour, touchy/feelyiness, plus a pic, etc etc plus microscopy if you do that! (not trying to put you off, it just helps the more detail)!
Cheers
Ken
