| | | Trichaptum abietinum for confirmation having passed these by for some weeks now, thinking they were "just another bunch of Trametes sp" i had a closer look today, and discovered them to be what i think are Trichaptum abietinum,
while rolling a log out of the way to take a better pic ,i discovered this one (no 3) which i take to be a resupinate form of the Trichaptum on the bottom log,
can any one confirm this ? (and, yes, i did put the log back )

| | | Re: Trichaptum abietinum for confirmation Hallo Brian,
perfectly right, this is Trichaptum abietinum. Very very common on Picea in Germany, but I dare not say anything on its distribution in Britain ....
The only species one has to take care of for not mixing it with is Trichaptum fuscoviolaceum/hollii. This is mostly on pine and has a truly hydnoid hymenium whereas T. abietinum has a (schizo-)poroid hymenium at least towards the margin.
@KT Chondrostereum is not possible, because it grwos only on hardwood, whereas the Trichaptums only grow on softwood. Besides they have different hymenium structure (smooth in Chondrostereum, hydnoid to poroid in Trichaptum).
best regards,
Andreas

Andreas | Thanks yet again Andreas, if i had found only the resupinate form on the logs i would not have had a clue as to what it might have been, but given the purple colour of the bracket ones, i linked the two together, and a search on the web produced pictures of both forms to reinforce my original guess,
it was well worth the second look, as i had ignored them as being Trametes for some weeks now,
