Is this Fomes?
Hi all,

I've been reading the current threads about F. fomentarius on various substrates in different areas of the country. These brackets are growing on a dead tree in the garden, is it a fomes? I'm not sure what the tree species is, I'll have to check next time I'm there.

it looks rather like Phellinus igniarius to me; could the host be a willow?

Willow is not impossible Chris, it's the right sort of habitat, close to a stream, like I say I'll check it out next time I'm there. Here's another shot showing a bit more detail.

I would agree with Chris, the cracked upper surface certainly suggests Phellinus
