| | | mystery Mycena . . . hello all
I'm going through last year's photographs and before binning this one of a clustered lignicolous Mycena with a beautifully pruinose cap (as it's not too bad an image) I thought I would welcome comments
I was mortified to have lost the material I collected as I always like to do the microscopy where Mycena is concerned, and can't even comment on whether it had a nitric smell . . . ; it was definitely on a fallen decorticated hardwood trunk, however, most probably old Fagus
I appreciate there's no way a definite species name can be achieved, but a group would be useful
cheers
Chris

In my novice opinion, these look like Mycena arcangeliana

not a bad shout I agree, I had ruled that out as the cap really was this grey colour, without the contrast between a cap with pale olivaceous tints and a violaceous stipe I would expect in arcangeliana
as per:

I just thought that they looked very similar to these, which were ID'd as M. arcangeliana a couple of months ago.

Chris | Hallo Chris,
your German is better than mine, I have to admit. Not to speak about my English .....
I don't know if it is so hopeless. I don't have knowlegde in Mycena, that's all.
Why not leave it as "cf. arcangeliana" by the way? I think it is a too nice picture to through it away. You never know for what you might need it one day.
best regards,
Andreas

You must have had some thoughts yourself if you ruled out arcangeliana There are not that many species that grow is such abundance.
Inclinata? wrong colouring for stem and cap
Galericulata just wrong
Alcalina looks reasonable on the picture in Jordan but this is now split between stipata cap dark brown - no good and silvae-nigrae again with a stipe paler towards the base so again no good
Tintinabulum wrong
Maculata or even leptocephala are just possible
but having said all that if you take a look at the photo of arcangeliana on the Mycena page (sorry mods its an external link ) I think you will agree it looks quite a bit like your find http://home.online.no/~araronse/Myce...angeliana1.htm

Hallo Mal,
my concept that I had in mind for arcangeliana was that it is not a fasciculate species. I remember one or two times to have found some Mycena I have identified as arcangeliana (always without being too sure about it ...) and the grew solitarily by three or four, but not fasciculate.
From your list above I would rule out M. leptocephala, which I think to know quite well. This also I have never found in such fascicles and also usually on small pieces of wood on (or in) the ground, not on such heavy piece of wood. And it has a much darker cap, at least like I know the species.
But just thoughts from a non-mycenologist
best regards,
Andreas
