| | | Fomes on oak branch?? after reading some of the comments on the thread thread by vixs re Phellinus robustus
heres a pic of a slightly unusual Fomes fomentarius (i hope its Fomes fomentarius ) that is growing on a fallen oak branch, judging by the way yhe branch was situated, it would appear that the fungi was growing on the tree and has since dropped to the ground(it was lying on top of the leaf litter etc)

| | | Re: Fomes on oak branch?? I remember John explaining to me about a Fomes he found on a log. It had grown normally, then the branch had snapped and changed orientation. The bracket sensed the gravitational change and proceeded to grow in the new direction- thus creating a very oddly shaped fungus! |

Brian. | Hi Brian
If left in this position it will continue to grow, but at an angle which would allow the spores to drop ... Providing of course there's sufficient nutrients to allow further growth!

Yes, it does look an odd link | Hi John, i've spotted them on beech in Clumber before but its the first one i've found on oak, but as your links says, not confined to birch at all,
i like the test for id your link provides; "May be confused with the red banded polypore. A test with fire is useful here: the crust of the tinder bracket does not melt when exposed to a flame."
