Is this Sarcoscypha austraca first time I have seen it very coulorful against the moss.

thats Sarcoscypha all right. Theres an S. coccinea and an S. austriaca but they are distinguished by microscopy unfortunately

according to Michael Jordans book, S.coccinea has not been recorded in recent times in britain,
does this mean it is rarer than S.austriaca or is it because of mistaken identity that it seems to be so?

I think theres no way to tell which species is commoner because most people who photograph it, will put automatically put it down as the species which the book says is commoner when there is a chance it could be a rarer one. As I said its all microscopy and not many people know how to do it. I'll get there once I get a stage graticule.
