| | | [ID] Fungus on Cherry Any ideas on this specimen. It was growing with others on a fallen Wild Cherry. Knowing me it's a common and widespread species, but i just can't find out what it is.
Also, i found small fungi growing on the vine of Clematis vitalba-Traveler's-Joy. They were about 3-6mm, Cap was Cream-buff colour, light brown distant gills, and no stem. I will try and get a photo but any ideas?? |

| | | Re: [ID] Fungus on Cherry Hallo,
ufff, I also can't believe that the tree should have been cherry. I have never heared that Piptoporus betulinus should occure on something else then birch, not even Alnus or hazel. But on a Rosaceae?? Hard to believe. There is another Piptoporus, called Piptoporus pseudobetulinus (today Polyporus pseudobetulinus!), but this one occurs on poplar only (?), may be only on Populus tremula.
best regards,
Andreas

Will go back and check again tommorow, hopefully they have not reached the tree in question. I believe there is Aspen in the woods, but would these turn that cherry colour on decay?? |

Hallo,
what do you mean with "cherry color on decay"? Did you determine the tree as being cherry because the wood has the color of cherry? This would be a mistake, because Piptoporus betulinus causes brown rot, which gives the decaying wood a dark redbrown color.
best regards,
Andreas

best regards,
Andreas | No, i did'nt confirm the tree, the tree was confirmed by one of the Arborists doing the work in the wood
Hopefully they have not removed the tree in question and i'm able to get a second look at it, it's 100% not birch. |

| | | Re: [ID] Fungus on Cherry Ok, this is probably my claim to shame moment
Went back and took a look, the tree did look some what different. Though it does have that Cherry look and it was in amongst other Cherries. So my adamant it's not a Birch is more to be 100% wrong
This one is Cherry
This one is the but end of the Tree in question
The middle
And the outer end
I'm asking a local mycologist to take a look, but i think the answer will be obvious.
I've also got some poor quality photos of the fungi on the Clematis, post these later | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
