In my experience they tend to appear in 'bulb' form at the end of July/mid August and reach their prime by end of October. By the time they have over wintered they are beginning to look rather sorry for them selves: Emerging Geastrum.sp
It's always useful to have a collection date on images in the Gallery to avoid just such confusion.
