Found in mixed woodland at the side of a path under some old pines in the autumn. It was about 8cm high and 10 cm in diameter.

Your photograph shows a lovely specimen belonging to the Genus Russula. However, this genius is notoriously difficult to narrow to species without certain pieces of information, some of which include tasting and chemical testing. There are some that can be recognised by the eye. The purple ones aren't too difficult, but this isn't my strongest genus! There are a few, but Russula atropurpurea springs to mind.
