It seems you have hit on what could potentially be a big problem with the records (well, the potential loss of information in them) if species get combined, particularly if this later turns out to be erroneous, seeing that the reassigning of species etc seems to be happening a lot right now. I imagine you have alerted the powers that be in charge of the records, so that steps are taken to make sure that the detail of which name they were first recorded as is retained somewhere in the database. That is probably the biggest and most urgent issue.
The fun and games with nomenclature is, I guess, all part of the red tape that embroils just about every human activity, and something we just have to live with ....
