| | | Cortinarius sp. ? This little group was on a piece of rotten wood in a damp outbuilding. Largest cap was approx 30mm across (since the picture was taken this has become shallowly concave). I thought Cortinarius because of the sliminess and the two young specimens on the right appear to show signs of a veil.

| | | Re: Cortinarius sp. ? I would have thought this unlikely to be a Cortinarius Steve, mainly due to the substrate. It looks very unsubstantial, which I would say is something that opposes Cortinarius.
Saying that, I don't really have a clue- it looks more of a specialist job rather than your average textbook diagnosis. That's good and bad- bad because it'll take an age to ID, but good because chances are it'll be something vaguely interesting!
My diagnosis would be to steer clear of Cortinarius, as I really don't think it is.
It might be part of Galerina territory or something similar.
Hope that helps a little |

| | | Re: Cortinarius sp. ? Hallo,
Nick hit it exactly. No Cortinarius, because they are all mycorrhizal fungi. And indeed a Galerina, I'm certain of that. It might be one of the marginata complex, it might also be G. stylifera or even sideroides. Here we need the microscope, but with that one would have good chances to determine the speices.
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Cortinarius sp. ? Thanks guys,
I must admit that I hadn't even convinced myself with Cortinarius, but I couldn't see anything that fitted better. I've labelled it as Galerina sp. and kept some in the "need further investigation" pile for when I'm better set up for such things.
