Also, did you notice the small yellow fungi on the branch? - I would think a Dacrymyces sp.

may be, but I don't think so and think it's an ascomycete. It looks quite interesting and perhaps Mrs. cherrybee can send me a high resolution pic by mail, so that I can have a closer look?

good idea, that was the thought I was searchig for in vain ....
If it is Bisporella, then it must be Bisporella sulphurea and this would suit quite well macroscopically
