Fomes or Phellinus??

is this just an odd coloured Fomes fomentarius or could it be Phellinus nigricans??,
found on trunk of a fallen birch tree, lots of normal coloured Fomes fomentarius nearby, any suggestions?

I would opt for F. fomentarius because you said there were others nearby, the flesh underneath is chestnutty coloured (as shown in Philips) also Phellinus nigricans is "rare in Europe, more familiar in Scandinavia"

i suspect that you are correct KT,(been nice to have found a rarity though) ive seen plenty of fomes in clumber, some have been lighter toned than normal, but none as pale as this one,

Phellinus nigricans was at one point Fomes(Phellinus) igniarius f. nigricans. As P. igniarius is already black can anyone with the appropriate literature tell me what justified a f. nigricans and the difference between the two.
