It was growing out of the wood  (a sign of common stump brittlestem?)

I would think that this is a Psathyrella (though I'd not have a hope in hell of narrowing it down to species!) Note the hygrophanous cap and how the moisture has been absorbed to darken the flesh, altering the appearance of the specimen.
