| | | Small Grey/White Fungus for ID I found this growing next to a rotton tree stump, looks like a bit like some of the mycena species I've seen in the forum. |

almost certainly Mycena galericulata (note the inter-veining at the base of the gills), but Mycena's a group with pitfalls and is always worth checking at home microscopically . . .
cheers
Chris

I considered the gills on this one (from the photo) to be free , so I'd discounted M. galericulata, as that is stated as having adnate gills.
As I'm still trying to become familiar with what constitutes what, regading gill profiles, would you say that these are still adnate?
Are free gills more obviously so (as far as a means of ID goes).
Appreciate any feedback, as it will help me with future ID'ing.

| | | Re: Small Grey/White Fungus for ID Well to me they do look free in the photo .... sometimes they have pulled away from the stipe and that can make them look free. But then again photos can deceive. The best way I find is to cut a cross section, and if it is done very neatly and cleanly then you should be able to tell. A small tough one though that fights the scalpel can leave you no wiser!
