| | | Lobed tree-growing lichens ..... All these were growing on trees in old, deciduous, oceanic woodland (Glengarriff, Co. Cork), the first is (I think) Degelia atlantica with a bit of Lobaria pulmonaria, as to the rest Clues to possible genus would be a very appreciated starter!
Degelia atlantica plus Lobaria pulmonaria?
Q1 and Q2 were growing among each other and are possibly the same?
And this one was in the corner of a photo of something else |

| | | Re: Lobed tree-growing lichens ..... I'd agree with Nick on the last one, and on Lob pulm for part of the first. I'll have to do some checking up on the others, although the brownish one may just be one of the Melanelia species. Sticta is another genus I'd expect you to be encountering.
More later: I've got lots of stuff to move before the decorators arrive!

| | | Re: Lobed tree-growing lichens ..... Colour doesn't look right, but my immediate reaction to Q1 was fertile Flavoparmelia caperata. Those wrinkles on the thallus are pretty distinctive. There's probably another lichen with a similar appearance, but that should narrow it down a bit. |

| | | Re: Lobed tree-growing lichens ..... Hi posch and Nick - thanks for the Peltigera suggestion for the last photo - is there any possibility of species ID without seeing the under-surface ?
I'd pretty much discounted Flavoparmelia for Q1 because of colour - though could heavy shade levels affect that? The underside (below) was whitish rather than black/tan. Can't find a mention in Dobson of apothecia colour which doesn't help, just that they are only occasional. Hope you got your stuff moved ok before the decorators arrived! |

| | | Re: Lobed tree-growing lichens ..... Last of the books moved! Degelia makes a lot of sense for 1. Dont think I can add any more. I have a nagging feeling there is another Parmelia s.l. with a wrinkled thallus, but brain isn't making the link. All the apothecia shown are very Parmelia like.

| | | Re: Lobed tree-growing lichens ..... Don't think its Physcia: apothecia don't look right. I've been mulling over whether Physconia fits, but wasn't sure, but its worth throwing it into the mix. |

| | | Re: Lobed tree-growing lichens ..... Checked out Physconia but they didn't seem to fit either
This is the same lichen (Q1) but from the other side of the trunk (mature oak) The colour difference really surprised me but I forgot to check underside colour in the centre of the thallus ..... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
