What type of fungus is this?

I found this fungus growing on a small splinter of wood. It was about 10cms tall, and the pictures below illustrate it from several angles.









Any ideas on what it might be would be greatly appreciated.

possibly one of the 'honey fungus' species . . . not much of a ring zone so maybe Armillaria cepistipes or one of its allies

but it's getting late in the season and atypical fruit-bodies are being produced
