Found today growing on fallen/rotting Beech stump & trunk.
I think they are both Xylaria polymorpha (Dead Man's Fingers)

You are right. The only other that it could be is Xylaria longipes but this is usually thinner and more delicate. Spores are an easy way to differentiate the two

It's the first time I've found them.
At first I wasn't sure if the ones in the second pic. might be X. longipes (Dead Moll's Fingers), but eventually decided they were probably too fat.
