| | | Re: Caloplaca head-bangers! Sorry I've been away from my lichen books: not that I can help very much! I don't find Caloplaca straightforward, and my knowledge of the littoral lichens is sparse.
Following the key in Dobson I think q4 should be C. flavescens or C. saxicola. Its got a fertile placodioid, aerolate, lobate thallus. I think its pruinose (cf. with q6 & q8, which don't have the pale colour on the thallus). I think the description of flavescens fits better (longer convex lobes).
I assume q6 and q8 are the same species. Again they are fertile, lobed etc, which restricts the options. I'd go from C. marina/maritima. AlanS has photos of marina which seem similar.
I dont think the last one is Candelariella medians: too many apothecia, and I think C. medians is a more mustard yellow. This may be a Caloplaca.
Lastly, for KT17. Brave try, BUT if one of these was C. corraloides, we should all be getting excited. Lichens of North America gives this as maritime on the coast of California!
Happy New Year,

| | | Re: Caloplaca head-bangers! Thanks for the replies.
The combination of colour and lobe shape for q4 didn't seem to completely fit with any options, though being on a roadside Post Office I wondered if it had just got really dusty and that had dulled the colour!
q6 and q8 were on the same PO - can C.marina and C.maritima be found away from the actual shoreline as that PO was 100m+ from a tidal estuary? |

| | | Re: Caloplaca head-bangers! Sounds too far away! They should be in the splash zone above the top of the Verrucaria. |

| | | Re: Caloplaca head-bangers! Thats what I'd thought .......
I'd wondered whether C.holocarpa agg. could be a possibility, at least for the oranger q8 ones? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
