| | rust or mould on mother Hello all,
This is growing on a rotting down leaf spike of mother in laws tongue in a greenhouse.
Is it a rust or mould - not seen anything like this before, slightly torpedo in shape - its clearly growing along with the strand pattern of the leaf.
Sort of blueish, with presumably white cotton wool mycelial strands at each end and a granular fruiting body - about half an inch long.
There are a few of them, one appears spent and is black.
Any ideas?
Cheers
Ken

it certainly isn't a rust; as far as I can see there are three possibilities, based on what has been recorded on this host in Britain in the past: Colletotrichum colubrinum a 'coelomycete' (these can look rather like what I can see of your fungus) Gibberella fujikuroi an ascomycete related to Nectria Guignardia sansevieriae another ascomycete fungus
of course it could easily be something else . . .
it needs to be watched, and when mature dried and kept for microscopic examination (I know your views re this, but without it it will never get a confirmed name - only a guess) I'd happily have a look at it for you
cheers
Chris
