| | | Two from October. ID's please. Hi all,
I've been looking through some old pics and found these two from October which I can't ID.
No.1
This was growing in an upland meadow, approx 20mm across the cap, slimy surface. Possibly a Hygrocybe ?
No.2
Growing on dead wood in mixed woodland. Approx 15mm across. Very odd cap, thought it may be a freaky Mycena.
Cheers

2) could be a mycena but is reminding me of a marasmius sp. because of the frayed edges |

| | | Re: Two from October. ID's please. For the first I'd probably be leaning towards Hygrocybe glutinipes, but it could be H ceracea, H insipida, even possibly H vitellina. The gills look a bit too decurrent for H chlorophana for me .... You do need a microscope to come to a firm conclusion, not just looking at the spores (which does help to narrow the choice) but also the gill and cap cells, even stem cells. Pain in the butt or challenge depending on one's standpoint .... H chlorophana is a joy under the microscope though ... lovely long regular gill trama cells and big fat spores ...
I've spent most of this autumn trying to figure out these hygrocybes (I was pulling my hair out last autumn with them so was determined to nail them this year) ... a few are easy, but most are really quite tricky and seem to appear in many different guises depending on weather, length of grass etc. And they will weather to look even more like each other too ... caps and stems will dry, caps and stems will go slimy and appear viscid, colours fade ... I love them though ... big fan ...

| | | Re: Two from October. ID's please. Thanks for your thoughts all, to be honest I'm quite happy that I got it down to Hygrocybe, the fine details of distinguishing between these (especially the yellow ones) are beyond me at the moment.
My microscope skills are very rusty Melanie (it's been a while since Uni ) although the more time I spend on this site the more it seems like something I need to get back into.
Cheers all
Steve
ps. any other thoughts on the mutant? |

It is certainly a Mycena but which one would need your rusty microscopy skills. With the inter-veining and growing on wood the most obvious is galericulata although the number of gills is quite low it is just within limits. An outside possibility is M. latifolia which also has the inter-veining and grows on conifer litter.
