| | | Ammonia solution I've been trying to get hold of this today, without success. Tried 3 chemists and asked for 10% ammonia solution ... two were polite, indeed helpful but didn't have it and couldn't order it .. the third looked at me as if I was some sort of druggie/terrorist. Having done a check on the internet maybe I should have asked for household ammonia, which seems to be 9.5%. That looks as if it might be available from Homebase in their cleaning section, or at least was at the beginning of the year.
Before I go on another wild goose chase tomorrow, where have you had success in getting this?
Thanks

Melanie | woodwork suppliers often carry the dilute form (Axminsterpower, craft supplies, isaac lord etc) because it is used for fuming oak.
you wont get neat ammonia as it can be used as a weapon (Punks and football hooligans used to refer to it as "squirt" and spray it in each others eyes - nice), and also can be used a base for making explosives.

| | | Re: Ammonia solution I had the same problem when I went into a chemist asking for hydrogen peroxide. They simply refused to stock it anymore. Apparently it is used in some sort of drug preparation! I felt awful.....being sent away as though I was some sort of junkie

| | | Re: Ammonia solution I have deleted two posts which are innapropriate content for a wildlife forum. Whilst I appreciate this type of information can be found elsewhere on the web, WildAboutBritain is not that place.
Can we keep posts relevant to the thread please.

Melanie | It might help us to help you melanie if you could tell us what you need the amonia for ? - (different strengths being appropriate for different applications), and also we may be able to suggest alternative chemicals that would do the same job.

I bought AMOKLEEN household ammonia cleaner from a local hardware store. It is 9.5% ammonia so is fine for fungi use and I assume would be ok for you.
