I've never seen a tree play host to so much bracket fungi, it was easily to miss it thinking it was bark!
Would it actually weaken the tree having so much living on it?

Is that an alder tree, i'm thinking you may have Inonotus radiatus there.

Nice find Claire, looks as if you could use the fungi to climb the tree.
