| | | my puppy has just eaten a piece of this New here. Please can someone tell me what this is? It has grown in our back lawn in Leics and has obviously 'gone over'. I think my little Jack Russell pup grabbed a bit (size of a 10p piece) before I could stop her and cleared the remaining bits away. Thanks |

| | | Re: my puppy has just eaten a piece of this Welcome to WAB mate. I don't know what it is but I wouldn't worry too much. Animals seem to be able to eat various types of fungi without any serious ill effect, unlike humans. Some of our fungi experts will put you right.

| | | Re: my puppy has just eaten a piece of this Thanks for the reply ron1863. Seven hours on and no discernable problems but I'd still appreciate if someone could ID it. I've been a mad keen birder for over 35 years and if someone sent me a photo of virtually any British bird I'd almost guarantee being able to identify it. Is it as easy for you mycologists out there? Who's going to step up to the plate? thanks.

| | | Re: my puppy has just eaten a piece of this I'm fairly new to Fungi but I know that it's often difficult to identify some species of fungi, even ones in pristine condition. So a half chewed one presents problems
Have you looked through the Fungi Gallery and information section on WAB??

But to answer your question if you check the posts in this forum you will see that there are lots of photos of fungi that have not been identified. There are many that can be named from fresh specimens but the identification of fungi often needs microscope work.
Although I cannot come up with an identification I am pretty sure that it is not one of the regular occurring poisonous species. Someone might be able to come up with a genus at least to put your mind at rest.

I didn't mean to be rude (although re-reading my post I must admit it looks a bit that way, apologies). The underlying question was genuine though, I honestly didn't know how easy or otherwise ID is for experienced mycologists, so your reply has been helpful as it doesn't seem as straightforward as the lay person (i.e me) thought. |

It doesn't look like a death cap or a Cortinarius so if the puppy is OK after some hours then I think all is well. There's a delay with poisoning from those kind of species, in humans anyway. I can't think of any other kind of fungi with a delay in symptoms but somebody might correct me. If I was to guess at the ID I would take a wild stab at some kind of Collybia, just because it has that look about it .
