| | | orange fungi for id this was found yesterday under pines in needle litter, solitary specimen, cap 40mm across bright orangy colour, stipe 70mm tall, faint mushroomy smell, cap smooth and not sticky/slimy,
i feel i should know this one, i have tried various keys to try and id this but the results gave Mycena/Russulla/lactarius as possibilities, but i dont think its any of these
any suggestions please ??
thanks,

Hi KT, that was my original thought, but it has something different about it that i just cant put my finger on
you are most probably right though, as i cant find anything else to say otherwise,

Hi Brian
I agree with KT, and the fulvous spotting on the gills suggests Gymnopilus penetrans, although this is a complex genus and species have been variously interpreted in the past
I would be wary of keys that came up with Mycena/Russula/Lactarius - taking a small piece home and getting a spore print (in this instance yellow-ochre I would suspect) would rule out all those three
PS what sort of key doesn't ask for the colour of a spore print at quite an early stage?
hope that helps
Chris

(it does not take much to confuse me )

Brian. | that's true - they do tend to be in groups - wait for the experts to come along
